Hymns and songs of the faith speak to me in a profound way. I will often recall a verse or a line of a hymn instead of a passage of scripture when I need comfort, or face a difficult situation.
The composers of hymns have varied backgrounds and the stories behind the hymn are wonderful to read. The composition of a hymn often comes out of some tragic or life changing situation that has happened to the composer.
One of my favorites is “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” The line which says “strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,” speaks to me in a special way.
Which hymns speak to you where you are?
How has God communicated with you through the words of a hymn?

Hymns help me feel connected to years - sometimes centuries - of worshipers around the world. Also, it seems to me that one of the few ways we address the awsomeness, the "otherness," the holiness of God, is through hymns. Hymns help to express the life and actions of Christ from birth through resurrection. Great old standards bring comfort and connection to others who've had the same faith tradition as we have, yet many newer, more contemporary hymns enable us to use more familiar everyday language to express the same thoughts in a more modern and understandable idiom, while with the same quality as older hymns (i.e., "Worthy of Worship").
Hymns always touch my heart I Love the old Ones
Hymns of the heart?
Where do they come from and how do they become apart of our lives? Worship is the media through which such hymns take root in our lives and are sung throughout the days of our lives.
Even those of us who are "tone deaf" sing hymns in our heart-of-hearts. Doxology.
Hymns do touch me in many ways. When I hear a word, it sometimes reminds me of a hymn: amazing - Amazing Grace. I find myself singing hymns we sing on Sunday throughout the next week. I am also reminded of singing the old hymns in church when I was a child. It is wonderful to see other church attendees sing from memory the old hymns of our faith.
Hymns are a strong part of my life experience as well. I remember singing in church next to my grandmother who sang loud and clear, but very off pitch! Her expression of praise through singing has been a cherished memory all of my life
